To be honest, I was feeling very discouraged with my blogging experience, and decided to abandon this blog altogether. But I received a really encouraging letter in my email inbox recently, and I've changed my mind.

Dear Elizabeth,

Hello. My name is Karla and I am a writing instructor at the University of *** as well as mom to my 15-month old daughter. In my spare time (ha) I also do research and am currently working on a project about pro-breastfeeding in public resources. I came across your blog several months ago while logged in to my birth club on BabyCenter one night, and after reading your most recent post from January I wanted to reach out to you to encourage you to keep going with the blog. You mentioned feeling redundant since there are already lots of resources out there, but honestly, I think every resource, including your blog, adds something new and important. And, I really haven't found that many blogs of women sharing their stories/photos of breastfeeding in public, even though you might expect there to be lots.

There are academic studies I have read recently that address the reasons why women do not start breastfeeding or stop before reaching their goal, and one reason has to do with society's perceptions of breastfeeding in public. Many women feel embarrassed about breastfeeding in public and fear the responses they'll get for doing so, and various studies show that women are right in their concern about backlash since many people find breastfeeding in public inappropriate (or if it's okay then only when it's done discreetly). I really appreciate that your blog celebrates breastfeeding in public, whether you choose to cover up or not, and some blogs I have looked at support breastfeeding in public but seem to emphasize doing so with a cover (or going to a nursing room or other more private area, such as a booth at the back of a restaurant). If we want to change attitudes about breastfeeding in public then we need to quit telling women it's not okay or that it's only okay when you're covered or hidden away; so, thank you for delivering the message that there's nothing shameful about breastfeeding in public, which is what telling women to cover up or go somewhere out of sight says.

My daughter has already weaned, but while she was still nursing I breastfed her a handful of times in public. I always used a cover due to my own personal preference, and thankfully I didn't have any negative reactions to what I was doing. But, I admit that I prepared myself for what I would say to anyone if they challenged me about my choice to nurse in public, and that's something no nursing mother should have to do. So again, thank you for the work that you are doing to help nursing mothers be able to breastfeed in public without fear of repercussion. I think the confidence you convey on your blog can help other women feel more confident about nursing in public, and maybe also help some people who would otherwise consider the practice disgusting or inappropriate to realize it's not.

I don't necessarily expect a response to this email, though of course I'd be happy to get one. I really wanted to send some encouraging words to let you know your blog makes a difference, even if it may not seem like it.

Thanks,

Karla

Karla, thank you for your encouraging letter. Expect some new blog posts from me soon. :)
I'm still alive.I have been experiencing a lot of writers' block for the past few months. Even though there's a lot of breastfeeding issues that still deserve to be explored, part of me just gave up on ever making a difference. Most of what I'd love to talk about has already been discussed and re-discussed all over FB, what with the jillions of groups and pages dedicated to motherhood and breastfeeding. I kind of felt redundant.

Hopefully over the next few days I'll be back again with some actual material to share. I'm thinking of asking a few of my friends from FB groups to guest-blog once in a while, to share different perspectives on public breastfeeding and motherhood in general.

See you soon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744086620458973101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928982554738668319.post-8131445655488641322013-08-27T07:43:00.000-07:002013-08-27T07:43:01.279-07:00My Triumphant ReturnYes, I've been slacking for a few weeks. But those days are over, and I'm back with a vengeance. Who am I seeking vengeance on? Who knows, but the important thing is I've returned. Much to your delight.

We've done lots of things as a family these past few weeks, so I'll just update you by sharing some photos of all the wonderful stuff that's been going on. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

I have to say, she is one of my newest heroes. Since I began this new journey into "lactivism", I have yet to be harassed by anyone about BIP, although I know it happens to other women.

My dream is to live in a country (a world, even!) where breastfeeding is not only tolerated, but normal. Where nobody thinks or looks twice at a woman nursing her child in a restaurant, store, or park. While it's unlikely that this will happen in the next few years as I nurse my daughter, I do hope to see it in my lifetime. I'd like for my daughter to be able to breastfeed her own children anywhere and anytime. Perhaps one day my son will grow up and get married, and I'd like his wife to be able to nourish my grandbabies the way God intended, without fear of getting the stink-eye.

I guess I'm very lucky; I have never been harassed or given a dirty look when nursing in public. While my husband isn't necessarily thrilled about my BIP crusade, he has always been supportive of my decision to breastfeed our children, and he understands that sometimes, babies get hungry while you're at the grocery store or the park. He gets it.

The community we live in is very open-minded and tolerant of public breastfeeding, in my experience. Nobody seems to think twice about it, or if they do they keep their negativity to themselves. I am grateful for that. Now, I want that attitude to be more common. I want women to come out of their homes, breastfeeding their children proudly no matter where they are. In a world so full of fear and hate, why should we hang back and let it control our lives? Why should we allow ourselves to do less than what is absolutely best for our kids, just because we don't want to "offend" somebody? When you really think about it, negative attitudes toward BIP are probably not as common as most women fear. If we just shrug our anxiety away and do what needs to be done, the majority of women will most likely be pleasantly surprised!

That is why I am hosting our local Big Latch On. I want every nursing woman in my community to realize how supportive our neighbors really are! I want us to be a beacon of hope and restored faith in humanity, a sign to other women that YES you can feed your baby here! YES you are doing a good thing, a normal thing, a beautiful thing for your child! That kind of support and caring is what brings communities together and strengthens them.

If you are a nursing mother, I urge you to locate your nearest Big Latch On and join in, or start your own if nobody else in your community is hosting. Even if its just you and a friend or two, your numbers count! Meet in a park, a church, a back yard. Meet on a corner in the middle of town, if you want to!

I'd love to receive some more BIP stories to share on this blog. Pictures are great, too! Show the world you are not afraid to do what is right for your child.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744086620458973101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928982554738668319.post-83359348202668599332013-07-20T06:39:00.001-07:002013-07-20T06:39:34.495-07:00Mother Nature! It's been a while since my last blog post, and for that I'm sorry. I've been quite busy, organizing our local Big Latch On and trying to get people to attend. It's only 2 weeks away!

Any way, the Hubster and I recently took a walk with the kids through Glenwood Canyon and found a nice little picnic spot along the Colorado River. So we decided to hang out, eat some cherries, and put our feet in the water!
Basically, it’s a worldwide nurse-in. Local chapters can
meet at the park, somebody’s back yard, a business, a WIC office, anywhere! As
long as there are two or more women and their babies present, it’s considered
part of the Big Latch On. Nursing mothers and witnesses meet in their
pre-chosen location and at 10:30 am (local time) the women put their babies to
the breast and have them latch on for at least one minute. The witnesses count
the women with babies latched on, and after the event is concluded the event
host/hostess reports the numbers back to BigLatchOn.org. Last year’s total was
over 8,800 latches!

This year, the event is being held on two days. Friday,
August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd. I decided, within an
hour of learning about this, that I was going to host the local chapter of The
Big Latch On. I can’t help it, I’m impulsive and spontaneous like that. Anyway,
my new friend Cynthia has offered to assist me in hosting this event. We have
already made a Facebook page for our local event and begun to brainstorm about
possible local sponsors.

Militant Lactivists of Garfield County, Colorado UNITE!

We have exactly one month to plan and prepare for this
event. We are holding ours on Saturday, August 3rd. I figured a
weekend would work better for the majority of possible participants. I’ve even
contacted our local parks & recreation department about reserving one of
the larger parks for the event. Hopefully we’ll have a big turn-out.

Because I’m so excited about this, don’t be surprised if I
blog about it a lot in the next 30 days. And possibly after that, too, if all
goes well.

And if you’re a nursing momma in Garfield County, be at Two
Rivers Park on August 3rd to join The Big Latch On!

Don't you just love baby animals? Isn't it cute when their animal mommies feed them? Look at that dog, she's even cross-nursing baby tigers. It's so adorable, I could spray milk across the room! (I'll let you guess from where.)

Why is it that nobody freaks out and says "EEEWWWW" or "Gross!" or "Ugh, cover up, will ya?" when animals nurse their babies? I'm pretty sure everybody who looks at those pictures says "Awwww" or "How sweet!" or "ERMAGERD SO KYOOOOT!" And if you don't actually say it out loud, that's only because you are dumbstruck by the adorableness of it all. Don't lie, you know it's true.

How ridiculous, then, to expect a human mother to be ashamed and cover up while nursing her own baby. Even worse is when women are expected to feed their babies in closets or public restrooms. Breastfeeding is nothing new. If it was wrong to breastfeed, then the milk wouldn't be coming out of our breasts in the first place.

If animals (who can't even READ, for Pete's sake) are allowed to breastfeed in public, what harm can a little human BIP do? Today I breastfed my daughter at the bus stop. Facing traffic. Without a cover. Who's your momma?!

We were on our way to the carnival. Lander had a great time on the rides, and Janet slept in her Baby Bjorn. It was a great afternoon. Then we came home and the boys ate pizza (I had a salad, thank you) and watched Finding Nemo.

Poor Lander is a little bit sick with a cough and a runny nose. So, being the weird mom that I am...I spiked his chocolate milk with breast milk. Let's see if that helps.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and BIP it up! And send me your photographic evidence!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744086620458973101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928982554738668319.post-78511209558792412632013-06-20T07:58:00.000-07:002013-06-20T07:58:01.152-07:00Milk Donor! So it's official, I am a milk donor! After placing ads on Human Milk For Human Babies and Eats On Feets (both are Facebook pages), I have been contacted by two ladies who need breast milk for their babies! Both women are unable to provide the milk their children need and went to those Facebook pages to find help.

Milk sharing is not a new idea. What do you think women did before formula was invented (only a little over a hundred years ago)? Once upon a time, wet-nursing was a common profession for women with a large supply of milk. To wet-nurse for royalty would set a woman up for life.

And yet, for some reason, now the practices of milk sharing and wet-nursing are frowned upon, viewed as gross or weird. Why is that? Not so very long ago (especially once you consider the vast history of the human race) these women would be honored for helping other mothers out. After telling a few people that I planned to donate my milk to needy babies, I saw some very funny expressions on the faces of people who know me well. And while I will admit to being weird, I am most certainly NOT gross!

Milk banks that supply hospital NICUs can charge up to $5/oz for "donated" breast milk. What they are really paying for is all the screening and paperwork involved. On OnlyTheBreast.com a woman can buy breast milk for as low as $0.75-3.00/oz and pay shipping. And while this is honorable in it's own way (wet-nurses were traditionally paid for their services), I have found a sense of pride in giving my milk freely that selling it would not have given me. In a way, you might consider it charity.

Donating breast milk is not for everyone. For one thing, you need to have plenty of milk for your own baby first. But for those women who have a large supply, I encourage you to consider milk donation. Even if you only do it one time, or only donate a few ounces per week.
And another coming up!Been working more than I expected the past few days. Apparently my work is really hurting for help right now, so there's more hours to go around than usual.

Then, on Tuesday, I'm on vacation for 8 days! My mother, sister, and I are packing up the kids (my two plus my sister's baby) and heading for Olathe, KS to see my grandparents, aunt and uncle, and cousins! I'm excited, I haven't seen any of them for three years!

I'll be sure to take lots of pictures along the way and while we're there. Hopefully I'll get a BIP photo or two to share. Lately, Janet's been asleep every time we go out! She's growing like a weed, and it makes her very tired.

So, in case you don't hear from me for a while, now you know where I am! Have a wonderful week and Happy June!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744086620458973101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928982554738668319.post-33232590993246156592013-05-27T16:31:00.003-07:002013-05-27T17:27:26.064-07:00Thanks, Facebook and BabyCenter!

I just have to say, I'm so proud of myself!!

With my dd, I wouldn't nurse in public, I didn't even nurse in front of extended family. When we were out to eat, is nurse in the car or the *gasp* bathroom. Id always go to nursing rooms if available.

But with baby J, I've nursed him everywhere!! Right now, I'm nursing him while dh and dd ride a ride. I've nursed him on a train ride, at lunch, and at a picnic pavilion. I've nursed standing in line for a ride. I'm so proud of myself, it's definitely making my day more enjoyable not having to go find a private place to nurse every 1.5 hours.

I've nursed all these places and baby is only 3 weeks old!! Yesterday my son went with his grandmother to a small family get together in another town while hubby and I went to church. After church, we had lots of time to kill and decided to be spontaneous. We went to see Star Trek: Into Darkness. And guess what? Ten minutes into the movie a certain baby girl got hungry. What's a nursing momma to do? You guessed it, BIP! Obviously I can't take a picture during the movie without disturbing the other viewers, so you'll have to just take my word for it.

Today our neighbors invited us to a BBQ at the park. And once again, Miss Janet was a hungry girl! This time we forgot the camera, so again no photo. Don't worry, though, one of these days we'll get our act together!

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day. Let's all take a moment out of our day to remember those who fought and died for our freedom, and those who have served our country in other ways as well. His big brother Aidan and my husband's parents (Gigi and Grandpa Jim) came to visit, and everybody had a wonderful time. Here's some pictures from our big day!
We were all very sad when Big Brother had to leave on Tuesday, but we are hoping to see him again next month! Today is my in-laws' last day in town, so we'll be having breakfast with them before they hit the road. What a fun, but exhausting weekend/week it has been! Can't wait to do it again next year!

Now 7 weeks later we are ebf and she weighs 11lbs!! I hope I get to breastfeed till she's two!
Many women are discouraged when their first breastfeeding experience turns out to be a painful or uncomfortable one. Unfortunately, there is a lot of pressure these days for women to give up and switch to formula without really giving breastfeeding a chance. This can lead to feelings of guilt or incompetency in women who had planned to breastfeed, but "had" to formula feed instead.

I would like to encourage all women to tough it out, even though that seems very hard. The initial discomfort and pain of breastfeeding will, in most cases, pass in a week or two. Talking to a lactation consultant or another breastfeeding woman can help tremendously.

If, for some reason, breastfeeding genuinely isn't in the cards for you, there's no need to feel guilty or like a failure. The most important thing is that your baby is being fed! Many formula fed babies thrive and grow into successful, intelligent human beings.

Just don't switch to formula simply because you experienced a little discomfort the first few days.

This one comes from Kathryn:

Hey, I am Kathryn and a mother to two girls. My newest sweet addition is two month old Lula. I exclusively breastfeed, and this little miss knows exactly what she wants- the real thing. She absolutely refuses pacifiers and bottles, which has forced me to accept the fact that regardless of my shyness about nursing in public, it has to be done.
In the beginning, I (tried) using a nursing cover. Luckily my first nursing in public experience was at her first doctors appointment. I tried so hard to put off feeding her until we were called back, only to have a screaming hungry baby. I cautiously fed my baby under the nursing cover, and I could feel everyone staring. Then came letdown, my baby gulped air and let out a scream and I knew she needed to be burped. As I tried to position her, the cover got pulled and exposed my whole breast! Of course, everyone just happened to be staring at this point! I felt myself turn red and seriously thought about going to the bathroom to finish this feeding. Just that moment, her name was called and I could leave my embarrassment out in the waiting room.
Lula never liked the nursing cover, she would sweat under it and fuss. To be quite honest, as modest as I wanted to be I didn't like it either. It drew more attention and made nursing a hassle. I ditched the cover and started wearing a tank top under whatever shirt I wore, this way while in public I could pulled the tank top down and the shirt up, only exposing my breast enough for Lula to latch on and when burping her I simply hold her over the breast exposed. I still get second-glances at times and the occasional stare, but it's something I've grown comfortable with. My baby's needs come first, and anyone who doesn't like that has to deal with it themselves.

I absolutely love my breastfeeding experience, and I am proud of our success. Nursing my daughter is such a bonding experience and it feels amazing to meet her nutritional needs in the healthiest and most natural way. Breastfeeding may not be for everyone, but I wouldn't have it any other way!
It's not about BIP per se, but pumping at work is also a very important part of exclusively breastfeeding your child. In fact, today is my first day back at work, and I will also be pumping in the workplace. Today's story took a lot of worry off my own mind!

Hi Elizabeth! I saw your post on the February 2013 board on BBC and wanted to share a story. I'm keeping pictures of LO off the Internet for now so unfortunately no photos! Here's my story:

I'm an exclusively breastfeeding mom of a sweet four-month-old boy, and I happen to work in a mostly male accounting firm in downtown Chicago. There's an acceptable mothers' room for pumping, so my transition back to work has gone mostly well. Then last week one of the male partners in the firm signed me up for an all-day conference at a swanky corporate club without consulting me. I was so nervous! What was I going to do about pumping? In a normal day, I pump every 2.5 hours, and I'd be at the conference 9 hours. And I was going with two men from my firm. I was so worried all week. When would I pump? What if I leaked? Is this going to affect my supply?

Finally, I decided to call the private club where the event was being held. Again, I worked myself up over it. I texted back and forth with my mom, and she said I had to call to make a stand for working mothers! I knew she was right. I called right away and explained that I was a nursing mom attending tomorrow's conference, and would there be a private room available? It took a few transfers, but eventually I spoke to someone who happily shared that I was welcome to use the women's locker room. I'll take it!

Fast forward to the next day, and I arrive at the conference with my laptop bag, double electric pump, and portable cooler stocked with ice packs. The locker room worked perfect. It wasn't 100% private, but very nice and clean! During my afternoon pumping session, a woman came in from the pool. She did a bit of a double take when she saw I was pumping, and immediately doubts and self-consciousness started flooding my mind. She's an older executive, she probably doesn't have kids... What if she complains to someone? I couldn't have been more wrong. Once I was all packed up she asked if I worked in the city and we struck up a conversation. She has a 25-year-old, 23-year-old, and twin 22-MONTH olds!! She said how nice it was to have a quiet place to pump because 25 years ago, there was nothing! We shared war stories from being pregnant and commuting, and turns out we both puked in front of Union Station in our first trimesters! :)

I had worked myself up over nothing. I went home to my sweet boy with 10 ounces of the good stuff on hand and settled in for our post-work nursing session. I wanted to share this story for all the other working and nursing mothers out there. Sometimes I feel like it's such a taboo in the business world, even though I'm so proud of nursing my son. I'm hoping my story will help someone else feel a little more comfortable!

Emily

Thank you, Emily, for sharing with us! Isn't it funny how sometimes we can get so worked up over such a simple thing? Fortunately for women today, many business and workplaces are finding solutions so that nursing mothers can comfortably pump at work. From a personal standpoint, it's not so much the flashing my boobs that bothers me, it's the noise from my pump. I don't want to distract anyone from their work!

I am looking for photos from breastfeeding mommas everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE! Where do you nurse your baby? The park? Wally World? At the BK Lounge? I'd love to share your BIP photos, so we can show new (and not-so-new) mommies everywhere that it's okay to BIP! You decide!I have heard public laundry facilities referred to by both names. Depending on where you live, one term may be more popular than the other. I've always called it the Laundromat (pronounced Laundry-Matt), but when we lived in South Texas I often heard the word Washateria. It took me a long time to figure out what people were talking about.

Anyway, I did laundry yesterday. My neighbor Becky was kind enough to give me a ride. Guess what I did while we were there? Besides laundry.
Ever-Awesome Becky was kind enough to snap this shot of frumpy ole me BIP. And yes, if you look closely, you can tell that I'm wearing my maternity jeans still. 9 months up, 9 months down, right? (Oh, yeah, right...)
